We have watched the United Nations evolve into a group of corrupt bureaucrats who have mismanaged the organization, empowered countries who flunk the human rights test and have done business with murderous dictators while filling their own bank accounts with U.S. dollars.

Kofi Annan should step down, won’t and nobody is calling for his ouster. Should we be surprised when Kurt Waldheim, the fourth U.N. Secretary General, has a resume that is sketchy at best? Mr. Waldheim, had a five-year term beginning on January 1, 1972 as Secretary General. At the U.N. web site Mr. Waldheim’s resume skips some important years which we are inclined to fill in.

Outside of Waldheim’s birthdate of 1918, the next year shown is 1944, when he graduated with a law degree from the University of Vienna. However, some interesting points are missing so we are inclined to print them here.

Mr. Waldheim’s involvement with Nazi organizations began in 1938 shortly after the German-Austrian Anschluss, when he enrolled in the Nazi student union of Vienna’s Consular Academy.

Later that year, Mr. Waldheim enlisted in a mounted unit of the Sturm Abteilung, or SA, the paramilitary brownshirts founded by Adolf Hitler.

In 1942, Mr. Waldheim returned to duty as an intelligence officer with the Wehrmacht’s Army Group E, which at one point deployed some 400,000 troops throughout the Balkans and in Greece.

Mr. Waldheim was named a war criminal by the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal on charges of “murder, slaughter, shooting of hostages and ravaging of property by burning of settlements.”

In 1947, the United Nations War Crimes Commission listed Mr. Waldheim as a class A suspect because it believed there was clear evidence establishing his guilt.

Since 1986, Mr. Waldheim’s name has been on a U.S. government watch list of suspected war criminals and he is banned from traveling here.

Mr. Waldheim served as President of Austria from 1986-1982
Throughout his term as President, Waldheim and his wife, Elisabeth, were deemed personae non-gratae by many countries. In six years Waldheim made almost no state visits, notable exceptions being Vatican City. As the Attic has printed before, the Vatican has a sordid history of providing a blind eye toward the holocaust, but doesn’t object to visits with war criminals and anti-Semites.
Anyone who can substantiate why the United Nations should exist without massive organizational reforms please let us know.
