Teddy Kennedy (D-MA), John Kerry (D-MA) and John Murtha (D-PA) are all among the most vocal “cut, run and retreat” crowd who love the term “quagmire” to describe their version of “no progress” in Iraq and the war on terror.
Now Congress is in a quagmire of it’s own, with a vote problem for their funding bill, pork loaded and issuing withdrawal ultimatums to our commanders and Iraqis.
Brendan Miniter at OpinionJournal’s Political Diary offers:
Ronald Reagan once quipped that he knew his economic program was working because “they didn’t call it Reaganomics anymore.”
Now something similar may be happening with President Bush’s surge strategy in Iraq, which has begun to produce strong early returns. Not coincidentally, House Democrats are finding it difficult to drum up votes to put themselves on record favoring a precipitous withdrawal.
Yesterday House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer made the surprising admission to Congressional Quarterly that despite weeks of arm twisting and attaching $20 billion in pork barrel spending to the bill, Democrats are still struggling to find enough votes to pass legislation to hamstring the president in Iraq.
Democrats may control 233 seats, but Mr. Hoyer said: “If you were to ask me if we have 218 people that I know are definite ‘yeses’ right this minute, the answer is no.”
House Minority Leader John Boehmer told a closed door meeting of Republicans yesterday that MoveOn.org is now endorsing the war funding bill Mr. Hoyer is whipping votes for.
“If there is any Republican who wants to be with MoveOn.org,” he said, “I think you’re on the wrong team.” What Mr. Hoyer has to now decide is whether a majority of voters will come to agree with Mr. Boehner.
The anti-Semitic George Soros is the chief benefactor of the Left-Wing Nut House known as MoveOn.org. That alone would make the House funding bill necessary to vote against.
