If We Retreat from Iraq

by @ 3:27 pm. Filed under Historical, Politics, War on Terror

The fools of Congress are discussing retreat, or as some would say, “cut and run” from a job not finished.

What if we had not entered into World War II?. It actually took the attack on Pearl Harbor to remove the FDR isolationists to get involved. What if America does get involved despite protests, isolationists, feckless and the “I don’t care” attitude?

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Desperate letters written by the father of Anne Frank, the teenager whose diary of hiding from Nazis documented the horror of Jews during World War II, have surfaced in the United States and will be released next month.

Otto Frank wrote the letters in 1941 in a despairing effort to get his family out of Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, before finally hiding the family, including Anne, in secret rooms in an Amsterdam office building for two years until they were betrayed, Time magazine said Thursday.

The family was sent to Nazi prison camps where Anne, her sister Margot, and their mother Edith died before the war’s end. But Otto Frank survived and returned to Amsterdam where he recovered his daughter’s diary of their time hiding from the Nazis.

He had it published and eventually, under the title “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” it turned into a best-seller in the United States and other countries.

In 1959 a movie was made from the book, “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

I read “The Diary of Anne Frank” in my room at an Amsterdam bed and breakfast many years ago as a young soldier serving in modern day Germany. I was one block from Anne’s home and I could hear the bells toll from the West Church or “Westerkerk“, which Anne speaks of in her compelling story.

What if we retreated? How many more stories have gone untold? How many stories like Anne’s exist in the Middle East? Is this what America has become, and open debate of retreat from a war we entered into?

My advice is to read “The Diary of Anne Frank”, watch the movie and reflect on your life in America and what life would be like under the threat of tyrants and dictators, extremists and terrorists. Ask yourself if America isn’t better for their accomplishments in the world, our graciousness, our goodness and our sacrifice. Ask yourself if our non-support of the soldiers of WWI, WWII, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and others would have been tolerated.

Ask yourself if America is a country with leaders of resolve or politicians with no intestinal fortitude, who abandon their military and abandon people with hope for a better future away from tyranny.

Then reflect on Anne Frank and what could have been.

“My God, this is the United States. We are the world’s No. 1 superpower. This isn’t about arrogance. This is about capability and applying ourselves to a problem that is at its essence a human problem.” – General Jack Keane (Ret)
