Mitt Romney, Olympics, Leadership and Real Straight Talk

by @ 1:26 pm. Filed under Business, Elections, Politics

I am watching the primaries play out and the establishment, status quo Republicans come out for John McCain. Mr. McCain has very Liberal tendencies and Mitt Romney has changed positions from Liberal positions.

For the sake of sanity, the New York Times endorsed John McCain, which should be enough to explain the Arizona Senator’s positions that face left.

It’s a dilemma for a Conservative looking for a true Conservative candidate. Please don’t tell me the evangelically crazed Mike Huckabee is Conservative or Fred Thompson was my man. I tell you bunk!

I have always respected Mitt Romney for his leadership qualities and business acumen. Mitt Romney saved the U.S. from immense embarrassment when he saved a corrupt Olympics.

“The Olympics gave him a public persona he didn’t have before,” said Robert H. Garff, a businessman who served as the chairman of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. “He grew into the person he is today.”

“He always has an objective in mind and a goal that he works toward,” said Randy L. Dryer, a lawyer and a former member of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee who worked closely with Mr. Romney and described himself as a Democrat, but also an admirer of Mr. Romney’s.

“But he’s not unwilling to modify that objective if it’s an uphill battle and not worth the fight to get there — he is not bullheaded.”

Beginning in late 1998, articles had begun to pile up about hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts bestowed on members of the International Olympic Committee by some of those involved in Utah’s bid for the Games. As resignations, investigations and tales of greed filled the headlines, some politicians and business leaders even suggested that Utah should abandon the effort to be host of the Games.

“I knew that the first thing I needed to do was to draw a clear, bright, heavy line between what had happened before and what was going to happen in the future,” Mr. Romney wrote in his book.

“No one likes joining a loser, but they like rooting for, and helping, a comeback kid.”

Mr. Romney, who had made his nearly $350 million fortune at Bain Capital, a Boston private equity firm, also showed he could pull in money for the Olympic Games. Critics, especially John McCain, spoke of Mr. Romney’s profit motive as if it is a disease and not the principal of the capitalist society in the United States. Mr. Romney is a success in many ways and John McCain seems jealous of that success and knocks business and profits while claiming to be a Conservative. That’s bunk!

Politics and federal money were also involved in saving the Utah Olympics but Mr. Romney deserves credit for cleaning up the corruption and making it a huge success that made a profit. Imagine that Mr. McCain!

Mr. Romney has responded to criticism about the federal share of the Games by saying that taxpayer support for the 2002 Olympics was less than in previous Games — only 18 percent of the budget, compared with 50 percent for the Games at Lake Placid in 1980.

Part of the reason the federal share was not higher, people involved with the Games said, was that Mr. Romney was so successful in working the private sector. Yes, Mr. Romney had plenty of help but he was the leader who brought it together and made it succeed when corruption and scandal was embarrassing the United States.

It’s easy to find ways to criticize Mitt Romney’s Olympic success but when Mr. Romney explains the John McCain record the media conveniently calls Romney advertisements attacks.

Mr. McCain and his surrogates have come out in force to defend the status quo and to be dishonest about Mr. Romney. John McCain has been consistently dishonest about the Romney record but McCain, like Hillary Clinton, will go to any extreme to win. The GOP candidates all “piled on” Mr. Romney in the debates but they couldn’t carry water for Mr. Romney when it comes to leadership.

Mr. McCain is continuing his false attacks against Mr. Romney and his surrogates are turning the primaries into a fiasco. We can only hope real voters in the GOP grassroots will see through this and understand John McCain is desperate to be President and is too Liberal to qualify. He is no Conservative, period!
