Just a few days agoI wrote about the memo circulating about amnesty for illegal immigrants without legislation but let’s not stop there, the Obama administration certainly isn’t. I covered the topic of education and loss of state’s rights in June. The murky plot of Obama education end run is growing behind the scenes.
This past Thursday, Obama delivered a major speech on education in an effort to garner support for his Race to the Top grant program and his push for national education standards and tests.
Obama’s remarks came after a recent speech delivered by Education Secretary Arne Duncan on Tuesday at the National Press Club, during which Duncan attempted to paint the Administration’s policies as part of a “quiet revolution.”
Obama and his ilk work behind the scenes on projects without the legislative process of open debate and allowing the people to see what is being developed and having a chance to contact their representatives to voice opinions. This is that “quiet” in “revolution” to implement standards that don’t allow individual states to manage their own educational process as is currently done. Simply put, it’s more expansion of the strangle hold by the Federal government.
Remember that big stimulus package? Have you wondered where all of it went? One place is the US Department of Education that had its funding doubled. DOE is using that windfall of funding and power to stage a significant overhaul of local schools; dangling grant money before cash-strapped states on the condition they adopt key pieces of the Obama education agenda. This is all happening without public consideration so parents will have to either go to Washington to demand some answers and accountability. Good luck with that!
The big carrot in all of this is a $14.5 billion “bribe” to entice cash strapped states to accept money for participating in Race to the Top. Want the money? Participate in the Obama program and receive funds. Don’t play with Obama receive no funds and wait for the hammer to fall.
Heritage Foundation concludes:
The federal government’s ever-expanding role in education, and now the Obama Administration’s push for national standards and tests, threatens the long-established right of parents to direct their children’s education and confuses a proper understanding of federalism. States model federalism for children by setting standards, tests, and curriculum. But that important lesson in self-government will be another unintended casualty of this standards overhaul now that the federal government is overreaching to set the educational terms for local schools—contrary to the spirit of the Constitution and the letter of federal law, which expressly prohibits federal involvement in standards, tests, and curriculum.
Thomas “Tip” O’Neill—a longtime Speaker of the House in the U.S. Congress—once declared, “All politics is local.” Not with Obama where all politics is in the hands of a very few bureaucrats, behind closed doors, using taxpayer dollars to fund their union pal to upend state’s rights and parent’s rights.
Obama wishes to change the entire US educational system without involving individual representatives in Congress, no vote, no debate. Autonomy of the states is being slowly shrunk in direct proportion to the Federal government’s steady growth.
In essence, the Constitutional Republic is being downsized while tyranny is slowly being supersized. Indeed!
