Obama, Unions and Boeing
When the government and unions tell a business when and where they can build a product we have serious problems with freedom, liberty and free market capitalism. That moment is here and it begins with the White House, Barack Obama, the National Labor Relations Board and unions.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has moved to stop Boeing from building airplanes at a non-union plant in South Carolina, suggesting that a unionized American company cannot expand its operations into one of the 22 states with right-to-work laws, which protect a worker's right to join or not join a union. (Note that New Hampshire has voted to become the 23rd right-to-work-state). Under right-to-work laws, employees may join unions, but in the majority of cases they have declined to do so.
In October 2009, Boeing Corporation announced that its second line of 787 Dreamliners would be produced in North Charleston, South Carolina.
By choosing to manufacture in South Carolina, a right-to-work-state, Boeing was exercising its right as a free enterprise in a free nation to conduct business wherever it believed would best serve both their bottom line and the employees of its manufacturing company. This is what many term "Free Market Capitalism."
Requiring employees to join a union is coercion, un-American and should be illegal. What happens to "Free to Choose" when a free citizen is forced to participate in something as a condition of employment when it's not directly connected to the job requirements itself? This is no less than intimidation comparable to organized crime and serves no purpose in a free society.
The NLRB and Obama appointees have asked the courts to intervene and force Boeing to stop manufacturing the Dreamliner in South Carolina. What do the unions and NLRB want? They want, with Barack Obama's blessing, to require Boeing to manufacturing their products only in the state of Washington where workers are required belong to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
The Obama administration is declaring war on all right-to-work-states and any business with union employees. "Free to choose" is not part of any free market paradigm in a Marxist world. In Obama world, the state chooses who does what and where. The federal government under the Obama regime believes they have the right to control private business and dictate where and when they can produce their products.
NLRB thug and general counsel, Lafe Solomon, is not asking for Boeing to shutdown the South Carolina plant which already employes 1,000 workers, but to maintain a second Dreamliner plant in Washington state.
South Carolina Governor Haley declared:
“This is an absolute assault on a great corporate citizen and on South Carolina’s right-to-work status. We will continue to do everything we can to protect that status, and to stand with companies like Boeing who understand what it means to take care of their employees without the interference of a meddlesome, self-serving union. This bullying will not be tolerated in South Carolina.”
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham stated:
“This is one of the worst examples of unelected bureaucrats doing the bidding of special interest groups that I’ve ever seen. In this case, the NLRB is doing the bidding of the unions at great cost to South Carolina and our nation’s economy.
“If successful, the NLRB complaint would allow unions to hold a virtual ‘veto’ over business decisions. Left to their own devices, the NLRB would routinely punish right-to-work states that value and promote their pro-business climates. The current makeup of the NLRB Board has been skewed against business. This action will not be allowed to stand.
“I would be surprised if any court recognized the legitimacy of this complaint. It’s pretty easy to see that at its heart, this is about union politics. As Senator, I will do everything in my power, including introducing legislation cutting off funding for this wild goose chase, to stop the NLRB’s frivolous complaint.”
South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint wrote:
“This is nothing more than a political favor for the unions who are supporting President Obama’s re-election campaign. Unfortunately, it comes at the expense of hundreds of jobs in South Carolina and thousands of jobs nationwide. There is no doubt that if the National Labor Relations Board’s claim against Boeing moves forward, it will have a chilling effect on job growth in my state and in right-to-work states across the country. Using the federal government as political weapon to protect union bosses at the expense of American jobs cannot be tolerated. I intend to use every tool at my disposal as a United States Senator to stop the President from carrying out this malicious act.”
Barack Obama has stayed virtually silent on this subject although he found it necessary to publicly protest against Governor Scott Walker and the Republican legislature in Wisconsin.
Thomas Paine wrote on December 23, 1776:
“I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as ABC, hold up truth to your eyes.”
Reason is not in the union playbook nor is the truth. So America, open up your eyes and seek the truth for only the truth will set you free. Indeed!
