John McCain will be the GOPs residential nominee and the spendthrift Liberals hiding in Republican clothing are doing plenty of hand-wringing behind closed.
Call John McCain what you wish but he doesn’t like earmarks or pork in budgets and has promised to veto any bill coming to the Oval Office that is pork laden. Republicans lost Congress for their spending habits that made Democrats look like misers and that miserable record has remained an issue for the upcoming election. Iraq has improved but many Republicans enjoy stuffing pork into bills to satisfy their constituents and have not learned the lessons of the last election.
Republicans that are in this years election are at odds with Mr. McCain and his anti-pork message and but the spendthrifts in the GOP should get on board the McCain anti-earmark express or suffer defeat in November. The American public is on board with McCains anti-pork message and he shouldn’t hold back as Democrats are proud of their tax and spend promises and are not shy to announce a bigger government under their leadership. Keep in mind Democrats promised to rein in spending and have done the opposite while Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) has done an excellent job in forcing an earmark moratorium in the House.
Republicans in the Senate have not had anti-pork leadership with Trent Lott leading the pork parade on his way out of the Senate and into the his new lobbying office. Lott secured $311 million for Mississippi’s bacon fest and Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY), is running for reelection and touting his $211 million pork haul for blue grass universities. We suppose Mr. McConnell is bragging about “pork for higher education” to enhance his chances of victory at the polls.
Pork Inc. has more from the Senate GOP:
That’s the short list of Republicans, we know Ted Stevens (R-AK) has consistently brought hope truckloads of pork for projects including his infamous “bridge to nowhere.” We don’t miss that little Texas porker Tom Delay who managed to intoxicate fellow Republicans in the House with fresh cooked bacon as House Whip. Delay’s tactics, which provided him the moniker “the Hammer” only got the GOP “hammered” in the last election. If Republicans refuse to support John McCain they are asking for a repeat of 2006.
Obama and Clinton are vulnerable on the earmark issue but uncooperative Republicans in the Senate are setting themselves up for a fall at a time when they gain leverage by following the McCain anti-pork lead. If stubborn GOP Senators don’t relent they hand the pork leverage back to Democrats and allow them to drown the issue.
Failure to follow John McCains anti-pork lead could cost GOP Senators their reelection bids and cost John McCain his opportunity to occupy the White House. If Republicans are to return the party to Conservative principles it’s time the politicians who wish to remain in the party adopt those principles in earnest or call themselves something other than Republicans.
