Since When Is Free Speech Un-American?

by @ 4:07 pm. Filed under Health Care, Politics, U.S. Constitution

Every recent poll on the issue shows that either pluralities or majorities of Americans have serious doubts about Barack Hussien Obama’s health care plan.

Reviewing the month’s polling data, Gallup’s Frank Newport sums it up:

“The bottom line is a sense that, while Americans apparently favor some type of healthcare reform in the long term, they are in no hurry to see healthcare reform legislation passed in the short-term on a rushed schedule. … A Pew Research poll released this week shows that those who are worried about new health care legislation are most likely to say it is because it involves too much spending and would increase the deficit.”

Off on their playtime recess leadership in Congress simply do not want to hear this message. Instead, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) have chosen to pen an op-ed in today’s USA Today calling those who want Congress to hear their concerns about health care “simply un-American.”

Pelosi and Hoyer claim that opponents of Obamacare are disrupting townhalls across the country by “drowning out the facts” about health reform. However, it is not the townhall-attending Americans that don’t have their facts straight. It is Pelosi, Hoyer, and Obama’s allies that are doing violence to the truth.

The Threat to Your Current Medical Care:

Pelosi and Hoyer claim: “The first fact is that health insurance reform will mean more patient choice.” This is simply not true. According to the non-partisan Lewin Group, under the House legislation about 83.4 million people would lose their current private insurance. This would represent a 48.4 percent reduction in the number of people with private coverage.

Pelosi and Hoyer also claim: “Reform will mean affordable coverage for all Americans.” But thanks to new price controls set in the legislation, yearly premiums for the typical American with private coverage could go up by as much as $460 per privately insured person.

The Cost Explosion:

Pelosi and Hoyer also claim their plan will “lower costs.” But this has been thoroughly refuted by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). In fact, the House plan significantly expands health care costs and it is Pelosi and Hoyer who have gamed the system to try and conceal this truth from the American people. The House plan delays any real spending increases until 2013 so that Obama allies like the Washington Post’s Steven Pearlstein can claim the bill only increases government health care spending “by about $140 billion” In reality, once all of the House bill’s spending takes effect, Obamacare will be spending $245 billion a year. And in the out years? CBO director Doug Elmendorf said this: “In sum, relative to current law, the proposal would probably generate substantial increases in federal budget deficits during the decade beyond the current 10-year budget window.”

A Government Takeover of Health Care: In his weekly radio address, Obama again claimed his health plan would not: “bring about a government takeover of health care.” Obama needs to check his facts with Pelosi’s and Hoyer’s colleagues in the Democratic Caucus, because Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) is on record saying that Obama’s public “is the best way to reach single-payer.” And Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) is also on record saying: “A public option will put the private insurance industry out of business and lead to single-payer.” Do Pelosi and Hoyer consider Frank and Schakowsky un-American for contradicting the President?

The raucous nature of some of the townhalls may sometimes be regrettable. But it should be noted that none of the confrontations turned violent until the White House instructed their big labor allies to “punch back twice as hard.”

Dissent and public debate are part of the First Amendment. People who seek to stifle public debate are the one’s acting in contradiction to our core American values. Which is why it was so troubling to hear the President of the United States utter these sentences last week:

“I don’t want the folks who created the mess doing a lot of talking. I want them to just get out of the way so we can clean up the mess.”

Mr. Obama once lectured at the University of Chicago on Constitutional law. He must have been misplaced by the school. Community organizing is much more his style.

Freedom of expression consists of the rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief. The Supreme Court interprets the extent of the protection afforded to these rights.”

Since When Is Free Speech Un-American?

When it interferes with another American’s ability to thoughtfully exercise their free speech rights.

Disagree with the health care plan all you want. But shouting down those who disagree with you in a town hall forum is ugly and unnecessary. In America both sides get their say.

  2. Liberally Conservative Says:

You’re confused Madrigal and you probably want Obama and his ilk to be your Nanny.

Sorry, Nanny rhymes with Fanny, so get your’s out and find your own health care and pay for it.

Some of us don’t want to subsidize you.

Furthermore, why does an elected official selling a bill he/she has not read rude? That is the ultimate insult to his/her constituency. Selling something you are clueless about.

Read up on the US Constitution. Free speech trumps lying government officials who work for the public, not the other way around.

They didn’t like the questions, so refused to answer them. That get’s the boss, i.e. the public, very angry.

And now hiring union paid thugs and ACORN ilk to intimidate. I’d really like the opportunity to use what the government first taught me and stuff one of those dopes into a garbage can, then ask my question without those slimy two-legged bugs flying around. Oh yeah, that’s free speech.

Do we still get to vote? Watch the anger show up in the polling booth, indeed!

  3. Madrigal Maniac Says:

I am always looking for adults from the other side of the aisle who want to debate ideas. On my site, I require those from both sides to engage in civil discussions. I like to give a link to those conservatives who can argue without resorting to childish behavior. I guess you’re not one of those. Don’t worry. I won’t post here again.

  4. Liberally Conservative Says:

Madrigal complains that it’s un-American to stand up to the lying politicians, get’s told a hat full, and now complains she won’t post here again because it’s not civil.

Telling me it’s un-American or not free speech to get in the face of a politician who only wishes to have one-sided conversations or sets up shop with paid thugs, that’s un-American!

Now if you don’t like the facts handed back to you fine, don’t return. However, you will find arguing with me may not be to your liking because I deal in facts and I shoot between the eyes when delivering my point.

That’s as civil as it gets here and it’s more civil than Nancy Pelosi calling senior citizens Nazi’s and un-American for speaking up.

Mr. Obama wants us to shut up and get out of the way. Mr. Obama, you get the hell out of our house, Marxist/Fascist hybrids not welcome.

  5. Shane from PV Says:

It’s funny how these libs like to qualify freedom of expression! When they are attacking conservatives on college campuses or chaining themselves to recruiter’s offices, it’s their right to and you can’t stop them or you’re a fascist! Submerse a crucifix in urine? Freedom of expression! Al Franken tackling a heckler at a Dem rally? Protecting freedom of speech! Child porn? Gay parades? Tearing anything with “God” on it from cemeteries or city hall plaques? Free Speech!

It’s absurd – or it’s just how the left plays the power game. Conservatives better see them for what they really are or we’re going to see conservative talk radio banned and Christian clubs dissolved for defying gay marriage.

Remember – modern liberalism has nothing to do with freedom. Nothing.

  6. Madrigal Maniac Says:

Indulge me if you will. I said I would not post here again, but after reading your reply to my comment again, I feel I have to. It will be interesting to see if you allow the post or simply crow that I posted after I said I would not.

    1. I don’t need Obama to be my Nanny. I have excellent health insurance. The debate we are having is how to insure the millions of Americans who do not.

    2. No congressman, democrat or republican reads these bills. Their staffers do.

    3. I did not say what they said was unconstitutional, I said it was Un-American, which is my right under the Constitution.

    3. I have only read of one instance where ACORN or union members have been at a forum. My understanding was that it was to protect the rights of those who were being shouted down. If they in anyway impeded others from respectfully sharing their beliefs, I would be against that as well.

    4. Stuffing someone in a garbage can? I believe that’s called assault and I believe that is illegal.

BTW, in case you didn’t recognize it, I just engaged in thoughtful debate.

  7. Liberally Conservative Says:

It’s not assault if it’s in self-defense. In Colorado one senior citizen who is at all types of events selling American Flags and buttons was assaulted by a couple of paid protector’s, just there to keep the order.

This was reported on talk radio and corroborated in the news. If they tried that with me it would, indeed, be self-defense and I wouldn’t be in the hospital.

You only read one instance of ACORN but if you were listening to Mark Levin (guest host) this evening Sen. Cardin is at Towson St. U. and a student called in and said they have paid union “thugs” standing all over the place and looking menacing. Caller’s words not mine. He said they are wearing S.E.I.U on their shirts. That’s the services union who brags about the millions they spent on Obama’s campaign. This too, is one instance.

Now may I further indulge the readers:

“What has been most unsettling is not the congressmen’s surprise [at the passions of the protesters] but a hard new tone that emerged this week. The leftosphere and the liberal commentariat charged that the town hall meetings weren’t authentic, the crowds were ginned up by insurance companies, lobbyists and the Republican National Committee. But you can’t get people to leave their homes and go to a meeting with a congressman (of all people) unless they are engaged to the point of passion. And what tends to agitate people most is the idea of loss — loss of money hard earned, loss of autonomy, loss of the few things that work in a great sweeping away of those that don’t. People are not automatons. They show up only if they care. What the town-hall meetings represent is a feeling of rebellion, an uprising against change they do not believe in. And the Democratic response has been stunningly crude and aggressive. It has been to attack. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, accused the people at the meetings of ‘carrying swastikas and symbols like that.’ (Apparently one protester held a hand-lettered sign with a ‘no’ slash over a swastika.) But they are not Nazis, they’re Americans. Some of them looked like they’d actually spent some time fighting Nazis. Then came the Democratic Party charge that the people at the meetings were suspiciously well-dressed, in jackets and ties from Brooks Brothers. They must be Republican rent-a-mobs. Sen. Barbara Boxer said on MSNBC’s ‘Hardball’ that people are ‘storming these town hall meetings,’ that they were ‘well dressed’, that ‘this is all organized,’ ‘all planned,’ to ‘hurt our president.’ Here she was projecting. For normal people, it’s not all about Barack Obama.” –columnist Peggy Noonan

“So what has the White House told supporters to do when you run across those who spread ‘disinformation’ about the new attempt by the Obama administration to install the anti-competitive practices of a ‘public option’ into a federalized universal health care initiative? Report them. … Pardon me for asking such an obvious question, but what concern is it to the President or his administration if private citizens have disagreements, discussions, and dissections of his proposed take over of the health care industry? Last I checked I had the constitutional right to do so. But now he wishes to turn one citizen against another? … The mistake this White House continues to make, seemingly on a daily basis, is that they reveal very much what they truly think of freedoms of the American political process.” –radio talk-show host Kevin McCullough

And to conclude a word from a Founding Father:

“On every unauthoritative exercise of power by the legislature must the people rise in rebellion or their silence be construed into a surrender of that power to them? If so, how many rebellions should we have had already?” –Thomas Jefferson

  8. Madrigal Maniac Says:

Thanks for the debate Liberally Conservative. Got an early day tomorrow and need some sleep. I’ll post tomorrow. BTW, I’m not a she. I’m a six foot three 250 pound basketball player with a mean elbow :-)

  9. Liberally Conservative Says:

OK Madrigal. You see, I’m from Chicago so big thugs (not you) get knee capped. It’s much easier and quicker. It also debunks the theory that size counts.

Not on the battlefield or in the bedroom. Indeed!

  10. John Devine Says:

This really is shocking. I didn’t even know Obama is calling “a public option is a trojan horse for a single payer system” an illigitemate concern!

  11. Katherine Says:

Free speech was most certainly called “un-American” when millions of people protested against the invasion of a country that never attacked ours. It was also called “un-American” not to support the Patriot Act, or indefinite detention without counsel or trial of American citizens.

It’s so cute when Republicans pretend to care about freedom. Really, it is. Do you people hear yourselves? Do you not remember the things you said to those of us who didn’t want to bomb innocent people in a country that never attacked ours? Jesus.

  12. Liberally Conservative Says:

What I hear Katherine is a miserable person who forgets the involvement in wars that would have been lost to save Germany from itself, Italy from itself, Great Britain and other free countries who pleaded for American help.

What I hear Katherine is a miserable person not giving thanks to the US military, both dead and alive, who fought to perserve freedom.

There is nothing wrong with preemptive action to quell the threat and it is irresponsible to wait to be attacked before acting to save your citizens. It’s called defending against threats of tyranny and attack that is being threatened.

I am a Conservative so label me as such. I am a Veteran and have son on the front lines defending against people who atacked, and sponsor attack against the United States of America. My uncle died in the Battle of the Bulge and is buried in Belgium because he volunteered to fight for freedom.

Without us you belong to the tyrants and are unable to express yourself here.

We are the people you’ve been waiting for but are too blind to see it right in front of you.

The Patriot Act saved American lives and prevented attacks on our allies abroad. But Katherine is to ignorant to understand that fact.

Hundreds of acts of violence were prevented because of the CIA’s work and the Patriot Act.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAA Katherine. Rangers Lead the Way so please stand aside and let us do our work.

BTW Katherine, what America citizen are we detaining without counsel? Even the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Guantanamo Bay have attorney’s and the moronic Attorney General of the US worked for the top law firm defending the ilk that would kill us all.

You Katherine, live on the wrong side of history. Indeed!

  13. Smellerbee Says:

Nancy Pelosi’s exact words were: “Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American”

She was not calling dissent or protest or disagreement unamerican. To say otherwise now that I have shown you the exact quote would be lying.

  14. Liberally Conservative Says:

Nancy Pelosi lied about Nazi signs also.

    Your analysis “Smellerbee” simply stinks.

The only one’s attempting to drown out opposing views were the politicians. Bringing in thugs from unions and ACORN to stop free speech is un-American.

    Those are the facts.
