I live in a rural area on a very short street. Two months ago they did another patch job to pavement that appears in good condition. This is how municipalities tell taxpayers their money is at “work.”
Some towns actually have the gall to list elected officials names that are “responsible” for putting our taxpayer dollars into hot asphalt. Yes, government is supposed to maintain security, safeguard the country, fund the military and maintain infrastructure not promote and grow itself.
I had called the local township supervisor responsible for 62 miles of road and he told me the patch work was all they could do because of funding. “Chipping” the road and doing a full job could not be paid for. I presume he meant for materials because the workers are on the payroll year round so new jobs weren’t being created.
Granted when new highway projects are begun some unemployed workers, many in unions, are called back to work and this is a good thing. In many cases the orange barrels sit for years as I witnessed in Illinois. Or in Chicago where road construction is going in perpetuity.
They’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars to stimulate the economy, so Senate Democrats said Wednesday they might as well spend millions putting up signs to highlight where the money is being spent.
The road signs, which let motorists know the paving and construction projects they see are being paid for by the $787 billion economic stimulus program, have popped up across the country. In a 52-45 vote, the Senate decided the signs should stay.
“Why on earth would you want to hide from the American people the fact that the recovery package we passed is putting people to work?” asked Sen. Barbara Boxer, California Democrat, who took the lead in defending the expenditure.
Boxer said stimulus spending is beginning to improve the economy and charged that Republicans and Democrats who voted to strip out the funds are angry about that success. The “stimulus” money has hardly been spent so the Democrat’s touting how the economy is improving because of this farce has become too much to swallow. The national debt is at record highs and even the Red Chinese are worried Obama has destroyed the US economy and by association theirs.
“It’s my sense that there’s a frustration by the people who voted ‘no’ on the economic recovery act, the stimulus bill, there’s a frustration that it’s working. They predicted gloom and doom,” Mrs. Boxer said.
The frustration for American’s is the constant lying and race baiting going on by Democrats who are failing and know the average citizen has figured it out.
Sen. Judd Gregg, the New Hampshire Republican who tried to excise the funds, called his amendment a no-brainer. He said its common sense to get rid of tens of millions of dollars in spending.
“These are self-congratulatory signs; they’re political signs. They’re so that lawmakers can pat themselves on the back,” he said. “But these signs cost money. Actually, when you add them all up, they cost a lot of money.”
Some localities have objected to the signs, arguing that they would rather spend the money on more projects. But Mr. Gregg said one community in New Hampshire was told no sign, no money for their original project.
No self-congratulation, no money. This is how big government spends your tax money by sending down the gopher hole in an attempt to get themselves reelected on everyone’s dollar.
Even the Libtard Chuck Schumer (D-NY) voted against the alternate spending so you know it must be terrible. If the spending bill was for our Armed Forces Schumer would have voted no.
The stimulus bill included nearly $50 billion for the Transportation Department. So far, $28.3 billion has been obligated, but only $2.6 billion has been paid out for projects. 5% of the money voted on has been spent yet Ms. Boxer and her Liberal ilk are telling us the economy is improving because of the so-called stimulus bill. Barack Hussein Obama is on the campaign trail touting his “success” and Joe Biden has been out lying to Americans with the same misinformation.
Auto dealers are still waiting for money from “cash for clunkers”, money they spent with government IOUs attached.
Yes, my rural street is about to get paved. How nice, it didn’t need the work, it’s traveled more by tractors than cars but we need to throw more good taxpayer money after bad.
I’m not Barney Frank (D-MA) so I won’t grab my ankles while they “stimulate” my street. Creating new jobs? Grab your ankles too. Indeed!
