Liberally Conservative

Ann Coulter – No Conservative

by @ 12:54 pm. Filed under Politics

I’ve been around a few years, my roots are from a blue collar family who voted Democrat 100% and embraced FDR and JFK. Not me, something in my political pathology did not contain genes from the left. There is no “neo” in my conservatism, but in no way do I support the brand of conservatism of Patrick Buchanan that indulges a version that is nativist, protectionist, and isolationist.

On the other hand, I’m a hawk and believe in preemption and nation building if the desired purpose is to free people from tyranny and allows them to build a free society. Further, I’m against big goverment, regulation, tax and spending by overzealous politicians whose only goal is to get reelected.

My parents supported a different Democrat party from the one we see today. Unfortunately, the Republican party has shiftless people well known publically who are on the bully pulpit as Conservatives or “neocons” spewing disgraceful comments during Conservative functions and are no better than the hate mongers of the Left.

I cringe when I hear the term “neo-con”, in fact, I have never liked abbrevations, the military drove me nuts in that regard. I like things spelled out, I like debate, but derogatory comments are not debate and belong in the trash bin of serious political dialogue. Anne Coulter and her ilk are not seriously informed and do more to diminish any Conservative movement within the Republican Party.

In “What the Heck is a Neocon?” (OpinionJournal 2002) Max Boot addressed the “neocon” term head on:

The original neocons were a band of liberal intellectuals who rebelled against the Democratic Party’s leftward drift on defense issues in the 1970s. At first the neocons clustered around Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson, a Democrat, but then they aligned themselves with Ronald Reagan and the Republicans, who promised to confront Soviet expansionism. The neocons, in the famous formulation of one of their leaders, Irving Kristol, were “liberals mugged by reality.”

It’s beyond me why someone like Anne Coulter is invited to speak at a convention of Conservatives.  Freedom of speech doesn’t and shouldn’t condone inflamatory remarks about the opposition when you pretend to represent a faction, conservative, neo-con, or Republican. If the Left-Wing ilk wishes to spew it’s hate so be it; anything representing Conservatives should not engage or support Left-Wing rants by duplicating it.

Here’s Coulter’s exact quote:

“I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Coulter was off base and had no business at the podium in the first place, she is disgusting at best. Dean Barnett writes at Townhall that he received this invidious email from a Coulter defender:

Ann Coulter hit the nail on the head. John Edwards is a pussified a**hole and faggot. That’s right, I wrote it and will say it in public. I don’t mean it in the classic sense either. Edwards is an effeminate, back-stabbing, hide-behind-the-law, ambulance chaser who couldn’t handle himself in a one-on-one fist fight. So, get your perfume out and go join him. Evidently, you aren’t man enough to tell the truth either. You’re just another neo-con hack who isn’t worth his weight in dogs**t! Stop blogging because you’re just making it worse.

The email was as bad as some of Coulter’s writings that, in my opinion, don’t support a valid Conservative agenda but demean serious Conservative views. If I don’t support the views of the Left and their hate-filled diatribes, how can I support similar discourse from someone who proclaims to be on the Right?

As Barnett so aptly states:

One of the reasons the left lost in 2004 was because of its sweaty embrace of Michael Moore. The hysteria of the Daily Kos and the Huffington Post are ongoing liabilities for liberalism. I’m not entirely clear on why conservatives would cheer similar liabilities in their own ranks.

I support Barnett’s view and would hope Coulter is no longer allowed to speak at important Conservative events. The 2008 election is to important and should not be sidetracked for hate-filled “entertainment”. I certainly don’t support John Edwards but I won’t condone demeaning acts similar to the Leftist hate groups.

Coulter’s incredulous remarks don’t derserve credibility under the guise of “Conservative”.

    Liberally Conservative,

I do not feel Ann Coulter diminshes the conservative cause. I think she charges up the conservative base. While her comments can be somewhat inflamatory, I recently saw a list of her most pugnacious quotes http://blogs.routura.com/2007/03/06/in-praise-of-anne-coulter-brilliant-quotes-of-wisdom/

I belive her comments serve to stir the pot and force us to rethink our positions. Even if you dont agree with her, she does force you to critically reflect on key issues. Her ends justifyu her means.

Ann Coulters’ ends justify her pocketbook to make her noticed to sell books.

Nothing Coulter said in calling Edwards a “faggot” served as a force to reflect
on key issues. In fact, it took away from an event meant to stir up the Republican
base, to see and hear candidates not lister to a blonde bimbo insult an opponent.

    Liberally Conservative,

Conservatives like Ann Coulter bring in ratings, publicity, and energy. People like her, Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh are needed to balance off people like Michael Moore, Ariana Huffington, and Al Franken on the other side. I read an interested though somewhat offensive article on this issue http://blogs.routura.com/2007/03/08/ann-coulter-defender-of-christian-america/

Liberally Conservative, I dont agree with all of her negative comment but I do think that Ann Coulter’s unabashed criticizms does not go unnoticed and she does discredit left wing liberals.
